Francois Morellet : Œuvres anciennes, restaurations recentes.
Text print in Techne n°24, Centre de recherche et de restaurations
des musees de France. 2006. p 53 to 59.
Abstract : Some early works by Francois Morellet have just been restored.
On this occasion, the artist has agreed to modify his position. Francois Morellet
demands a faultless appearance for his creations with their radical aesthetics,
even if that means executing an
entirely new version of a damaged work, should
he consider it necessary: For some peices bearing witness to his early work he has,
however, adapted a more moderate approach, close to that of the museum
curators with whom he has sometimes clashed and with whom he has reached a
compromise, more concerned with historical accuracy.
In contemporary art presentation, conservation, and restoration all benefit from
dialogue with the creator.
Point of view may however diverge, with artists and
institutions favouring
different aspects with regard to the meaning of the work.
